Practice Your Own Love Languages To Yourself

I attended a zoom gathering this morning about The Art of Slowing Down, focusing on Work-Life Balance.

One of the participants shared this line on the chat box: Practice Your Own Love Languages To Yourself. I was blown away. It never occurred to me I could do this.

We (at least I do) tend to look for the things we need from other people. When you think about it, the line makes so much sense because the best person who could give us what we need is ourselves. The person who knows us and what we need the most and the best is ourselves.

My two main love languages are quality time and words of affirmation. I have no problems with the first one, however receiving the second one is something I struggle with. I find that I long for words to feel secure. After a long, painful process, I’ve come to learn that we cannot expect everyone to be comfortable using words to express their care or love for us.

I’ll admit, I’ve not been the kindest to myself. I found it timely to hear that idea as I’ve been needing words of affirmation lately. I know I cannot expect friends and loved ones to give this to me each time I need it, so I thought why not give it to myself instead?

I’ve yet to practice this, but it was a great realization. I know it wouldn’t always be easy to have this kind of mindset… still I’m grateful for this new learning.
