What Being A Leader Is Teaching Me

I recently officially joined a team at work as one of their leaders. It has been challenging transitioning to my own team as there are a lot of processes I need to learn and adapt to. The first week was exhausting.

On the last day of that first week, I got on a call with my partner to discuss and strategize on how we could improve our team’s daily workflow. After our call, it felt like all the exhaustion and stress disappeared or at least felt worth it.

We discussed some choke points and possible solutions, but what got to me was learning how my partner handled the team and how much he cared for the well-being of everyone.

It had been a while since I wrote anything but that night, after a tiring work week, I had this realisation:

Going into this role, my goal was to help my team grow in ways I thought they needed. What I’m learning is that as a leader, we should first know what our team’s goals and needs are before we can help them. As their leader, we should help them grow in ways that they need, not just in ways we want them to.
